A dental crown is a custom, lab-made restoration that covers the tooth to restore its function and natural appearance. If a tooth cannot be restored by a traditional dental filling or other dental restoration, a dental crown is used to strengthen and support the remaining tooth structure. Durable and long lasting, dental crowns are offered in a variety of options, most notably ceramic, which is tooth colored. This restorative treatment looks like a normal tooth and is an excellent solution for teeth that are damaged by dental decay or fractures.
Dental Crowns Are Used To:
- Repair dental decay
- Fix broken teeth
- Support tooth structure
- Improve the appearance of teeth
- Repair large fillings that are breaking down
- Protect teeth after root canal therapy
What Does Treatment for a Dental Crown Entail?
Dental crowns usually require two appointments. During the first appointment, several dental impressions will be taken of your tooth, which will be sent to our dental laboratory and used as a mold to create your permanent custom dental crown.
After the mold is taken, our dentist will numb the area and then carefully remove existing dental decay to shape the healthy natural tooth so that it is ready to fit the new dental crown. You will be given a temporary crown to use until your next dental visit, which usually takes place two weeks after the initial appointment. This will give our lab time to fabricate your new dental crown.
During your second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed. After your tooth is cleaned, your new dental crown will be placed. Our dentist will carefully test your bite to ensure you have the proper fit and provide you with instructions on how to care for your teeth to maintain long-term success for your new crown.
